You might say we’re well familiar with burnout over here.
(And my gut says that you might be, too.)
Which is why I’m so passionate about all things work-life balance, following your own path, anti-hustle culture – you name it.
In fact, I’m even passionate about quitting!
And funny enough, that’s exactly why we just made a 6-hour move from Kentucky to Ohio. Read on for the tea!
Why we quit and packed our bags.
You probably already know how it goes: You’re 18, your college years are just around the corner, so you enroll with the first major you think you’d be interested in.
One thing leads to another, and you’re four years down, trudging on in that same major you picked as a highschooler, and you land your first adult job!
At this point, you may have already suspected that this might not be your life’s passion – but that’s okay. Nobody really loves their job, right?
Sound familiar?
And that was almost exactly my sweet husband’s scenario. After about 5 years in the 9-5 world as an accountant, the burnout finally caught up to him.
Now I’m a firm believer in doing what’s uniquely best for you, even if it’s “out of the norm.”
That’s why, when my husband got the opportunity from a good friend to switch careers and work as a low-voltage electrician, it was almost a no-brainer.
And yes, you heard that right. From accountant, to electrician. Life’s funny.
While initially shocking, the more research we did about the change (and the subsequent move!), the more excited we became – and the more we knew this was going to be a better fit for us.
Turns out, my husband just wasn’t cut out to stare at a computer, typing numbers, day in, and day out, without change.
(And if I’m being honest, I truly believe very few of us are cut out for the mundane repetitiveness that comes with an office job. But that’s a soap box for another time 👀)
The internet is full of articles, studies, and personal stories of people who have gone from an office job to blue collar, and their mental health and quality of life has been much better for it!
And in all honesty, we’d been waiting for an opportunity for him to change careers for a long time.
We both knew accounting wasn’t for him, but we had absolutely no idea how he could do something else without going back to school.
Until now! This job gave us the perfect chance to have him switch to a job that would be mentally stimulating and engaging, get him on his feet, allow him to work with friends, and even increase his salary (although money isn’t everything.)
Needless to say, it came as a shock to almost anyone we told 😅
But once they heard our reasonings, pretty much everyone understood.
And while I feel very fortunate to have the support we were given from our friends and family, here’s your friendly reminder that not everyone will always understand your journey.
And that’s exactly my point.
Our society and corporate world has a very linear path to what they consider “successful.”
And I’m a big believer in determining your own definition of success that’s unique to you, your stage of life, and your goals.
And if that means quitting your stereotypically “successful” job, to pursue one that will get you to where you actually want to go and be happy on the way?! I say go for it.
Point is, your path can be unconventional. And that’s okay!
So maybe 2024 is where you begin your own journey just like us – whether that’s quitting your “safe” corporate job, launching your business, switching careers, you name it!
Just remember – life isn’t linear, and neither is success. What worked for you in a previous stage of life may not be working for you anymore, and it may be preventing you from getting to where you want to go in the future.
So don’t be afraid to analyze, adapt, and go after your own journey!
And if you’re in the midst of your own big change, feel free to reply with your story! I’d love to hear it.
